Of Flax ... that is!
Yes, welcome to our 40 acre test plot! This is the first year we have ever grown flax (L. usitatissimum) and it is in full bloom ... hence, my little blue sea! Flax is an interesting crop ... for starters, it has 12 distinct growth stages and it's flowering stage is so very different from other crops like peas and canola. When flax reaches the full flowering stage, the flowers begin to open just shortly after sunrise ... especially on clear, warm, sunny, summer days and by mid-afternoon the petals are shed! In other words, if you hope to see this incredible blue crop in full flower in the evening ... you won't, in fact you are hard pressed to find blooms by 3:00 pm!!! If you ever want to catch a glimpse of a flax crop, you will have to be an early bird ... or at least do a drive-by before noon! Haha!
