It's Not Moss ...

It's the Manitoba Maples in Bloom!

Not many give them a second glimpse, after all, the Manitoba Maples (Acer negundo L.) or Box Elders,  are a well known 'shelter belt' tree ... especially around here!  I guess they get lumped in with 'caraganas!'  That being said, when they flower, at first glimpse, it almost looks like 'moss' is dangling from the branches.  However, on closer inspection, you will find very small, dainty flowers bursting from long lil' shoots or racemes!  They say their flowers are insignificant but I find them rather intriguing!

Beginning to Burst

Spring is sooner recognized by plants than by men.
~Chinese Proverb

It's true ... I know with that cold wind blowing, I have yet to put away my winter clothes, so I am glad my Manitoba Maple (Acer negundo) is showing positive signs of spring!

Samara!

Hmm ... sounds better than it looks doesn't it?  "Samara"♪... it kind of rolls off the tongue!  Haha!  Well, these samaras are the simple, winged, dried fruit produced by the many Manitoba Maples (Acer negundo) or Box Elders in my yard!  The kids and I love laying in the grass ... or at this time of year, snow and watch them 'flutter' to the ground!  And with such an abundance dangling from my trees there is no shortage of birds ... they love the seeds!
