Let's Dance!

Having been shut out by clouds to the first big aurora show late Tuesday and early Wednesday, I had my fingers crossed that the sky would clear for aurora on night two!  Initially, I not only had a bit of an aurora dance but it was blanketed in ice fog!  I've never seen a glow like this before!  I could see the strong bands of aurora dancing their hearts out through the thick, low ice fog.  It certainly created a very ominous atmosphere!

Thinking I wasn't going to see much more than the green glow, I somewhat packed it in! However, once back in the house I checked the Aurora forecast once again and knowing that a full fledged storm was in action ... I headed back outside on the hopes that the ice fog would clear!  Lucky for me ... it did!!!  Let's Dance!

The Aurora Borealis are an amazing phenomena!  They make staying out in the cold til' the early morning hours worth it!  No matter how often one may see them, they will still mesmerize you again and again!

  2. Going north in the winter isn't usually my thing but I might have to sometime just to see this. Your photos are incredible. How long were you out there?

    1. You definitely need to come north Matt! The aurora are an amazing phenomena ... a must see! I was out for about 2-3 hours in total. You definitely have to dress for the occasion and hand warmers are a must have! :)

  3. How lucky you get to see the Northern Lights so often, and that you have such perseverance. When I held my mouse over your photos, different dates popped up for February in the URL. Does that mean you were fortunate to see these for each of those days in a row? If so, you must be EXHAUSTED, staying up late all of those days! Or was that just how you numbered them and they all are taken on the same night?

once I saw these on Thursday night, I darted out of bed to see if we were having a light show, I couldn't really see anything though. Aw shucks!

    1. These were all taken the same night Renee. I headed out around 11:30pm and was back in shortly after 2:00am. Especially on bright moonlit nights, don't trust your eyes (at least don't be quick and hasty)!!! Honestly, take your camera outside ... its amazing what you camera will pick up and after your eyes have adjusted its amazing what you will see! These are some great links for aurora notifications: http://www.softservenews.com/Aurora.htm, http://www.aurorawatch.ca, and http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/2. Use a higher ISO setting and play with 15-30 second exposures!

    2. Thanks, Terri! I will check out these sites! Great tips. I know what you mean about the camera picking up colours that the eye doesn't see. Last July my camera picked up greens and pinks, while I only saw white! You are so helpful and inspiring! Thanks, again? I forgot to mention, I absolutely love the shot with person with the light on his / her head, the light draws my attention to the stars and to the Northern lights? Is that you in a timed selfie?
