Fireworks From Above!

Aaaaaah ... while you were sleeping, the heavens put on quite the fireworks display very early this morning!  Just after midnight, the Aurora Borealis were triggered by a strong geomagnetic storm.  It was a wild display that could be seen as far south as Kansas, USA.  Lucky for me, the sky was clear and my 'night owl' attributes allowed me to take in the show for a couple of hours!  Enjoy!

  1. Terri, I was outside at the same time as you this morning. It was the first time I've ever seen coloured Northern lights here on our acreage. I woke up the whole family at about 2:30 to come out and watch. I also figured out how to photograph them, and am hoping they will be clear enough to post tomorrow. I wondered if you were seeing the same lights as us! Wonderful shots, once again! I'm off to bed early, so I can get up again to see if there will be a show early in the am!

    1. YEAH!!!! I'm so glad you and your family got to see them! Aren't they amazing? Haha ... My mom used to always wake us up and drag us outside as well! LOL! I am so looking forward to seeing your pics! I am sure they turned out wonderfully! I don't know if they were active again last night or not ... we ended up being overcast with a pretty active thunderstorm. I should've got up and taken lightning pics! Haha!

  2. These are so beautiful. I would love to see this in person. We are well north of Kansas but I haven't heard of anyone around here seeing a display like this.

Now that I'm back home from my first trip to Canada here are some things I noticed.
In Canada you use the washroom. We say bathroom or if you want to be a little more polite it's restroom.
We were at Eaton Center food court and I noticed that everyone had a straw in their can. We drink straight from the can. We probably looked like barbarians.
Traffic in Toronto was VERY heavy but no one honks their horn not even taxi drivers. In Chicago their are lots of angry horns in heavy traffic. We really appreciated the politeness of the Canadiens since we often didn't know where we were going.

We really enjoyed our trip. Maybe we'll try Alberta next time. :)

    1. Thank you Matt! It was a gorgeous display and certainly a must! Add it to your bucket list! They are so amazing to watch, no matter how often you see them! The links I saw of the aurora visible in Kansas were definitely not as vibrant as what we saw but there were a few people that did see them. Our Canadian quirkiness! Haha ... no, nobody thought you were barbarians from drinking from a can! I do know a few Canucks that drink straight from the can as well but I also know many who use a straw! LOL! Yup, we're not 'honkers!' For the most part, I think most of us are pretty laid back ... we don't sweat the small stuff! So glad you and your family had a great Canadian holiday! Definitely think about returning and checking out Alberta! You guys could check out the Calgary Stampede, the Rocky Mountains (Banff, Jasper, Kananaskis), the Badlands ... I could list so much more! If you ever want some information I can always send you some great link! Here's a teaser! http://youtu.be/ThFCg0tBDck

  3. I see a rabbit in your last photo!

I went out the next night and it was very cloudy and there was lightning. Last night there were no Northern Lights, but the sky was clear and loaded with stars! My pictures of the Northern Lights aren't that clear, but a good first attempt, considering I didn't really have a clue what I was doing. Hopefully,I get to try again soon! I posted them last night!
