Sun Dogs!

We enjoyed a beautiful 'SPRING-LIKE'  (yes, I did say spring) day but judging by the weather forecast and the 'Sun Dogs' ... I think it was the calm before the storm!  There is a heavy snowfall warning out with an expected 15-25cm dump of the white stuff!  I guess 'Old Man Winter' really isn't ready to take a holiday!

  1. I like that flare/rainbow thing you captured. (Not sure what to call it)
I hope the weather straightens out. We are planning a trip to Toronto in late June. I don't want to have to pack snow shoes. :)

    1. The 2 bright flares on either side of the sun are referred to as Sun Dogs and the arc is a solar halo (there was a full halo around the sun earlier in the day, when the sun was higher). It's usually a strong sign that the weather is about to change ... and it did!!! We're having a blizzard today! YUCK! We all hope the weather changes soon ... hopefully you won't need to worry about snowshoes in Toronto in late June! Here's a couple of links on sun dogs and solar halos: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/22°_halo and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog

  2. Interesting. I was surprised that it says they can be viewed anywhere in the world in any season. Most of the photos on google image search look to be in cold climates. This was my favorite. http://www.freewebs.com/jmdday/Sundog.jpg

    1. I think they are just more readily seen/visible in the colder climates. I don't think people think to look for them in warmer areas.
